STANDING COMMITTEE – Clergy (Elect One)

The Rev. William J. Cavanaugh – Church of the Epiphany, Richardson, Since 2004

Parish:

Rector, Church of the Epiphany, Richardson (2004–present)

Diocese:

Province:

General Convention Deputy (2009)

Community:

Leadership Richardson (2004-05); Board of Directors, The Warren Center (2005-2008); Board Chair, Network of Community Ministries (2009-present)

Occupation:

I work hard at being a faithful and hopefully effective Rector of the Parish as well as being a good husband and father to two sons.

Gifts or Skills:

Bill is a gifted teacher and natural leader who is able to clearly articulate what it means to be a “resurrection people” by sharing his personal faith and helping others find/strengthen their own. He is a good listener and a prayerful decision maker. Bill also encourages and mentors others as they discover their own talents and how they can use those talents to spread the Good News.

Reason for Serving:

Having never served on a Standing Committee, I would like to bring the fruit of 29 years of Parish ministry as well as an appreciation and love of the Diocese of Dallas to this work. My desire would be to keep us focused on ‘the main thing’: mission, keeping as many members of the Diocese as possible on board as we move ahead boldly in these difficult and challenging times.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

My personal story is a story of Jesus Christ transforming me, enabling me to experience resurrection and new life. It happened in and through the Episcopal Church. I know that God can continue to use this part of Christ’s Body as an agent of renewal and transformation.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

My hope is that we become even more ‘One Church’ - a body of faithful believers with differing opinions about issues but a common commitment to Jesus Christ - able to celebrate our common faith and seeking common ground with those who differ and disagree with us. We need to continue to be ‘Developing Leaders’ - as the Church faces a dramatically new and different context for ministry; we need to encourage creative, entrepreneurial, committed persons to become the next generation of leaders of the Episcopal Church. With new and dynamic leaders being raised up, our future will not be one of decline, but of new beginnings.

Community:

Occupation:

I am a full-time Parish Priest. I have served the church full-time since graduating from Seminary in 1978, except from 1997-2001 when I was on Sabbatical.

Gifts or Skills:

I think her forthrightness, her life experience and her wider church experience outside the Diocese will make her a good asset to the standing committee. Also her deep evangelistic commitment will make a difference in supporting the diocesan plan.

Reason for Serving:

I have the utmost respect for this Diocese and would aspire to serve even handedly using my 30 years of experience in TEC. I believe my experience on the Commission on Ministry would serve in good stead to candidates and postulants for ministry. I also believe my service in Rural Ministry would bring a balance to Diocesan issues on the agenda.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Everything. Jesus Christ has transformed my life by calling a shy child to the ministry and then making her into His servant. “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

Church growth and new church planting – I have read everything I can find on these subjects and would bring that passion to the work of the Diocese and TEC.

Gifts and Skills:

Fr. Reed combines a commanding, principled approach to leadership with the heart of a pastor and a love for people. He is discerning and conscientious. He is a man of integrity. He knows the Episcopal Church and the values of our Diocese.

Reason for Serving:

Having served on the Executive Council of the Diocese, I believe that the best days of this Diocese are in its future. I see serving on the Standing Committee as a way to continue to improve this already great Diocese. Additionally, I believe that my experience as a Priest and Chaplain have equipped me with the leadership skills necessary to work with the other members of the committee and our Bishops to that end.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

If we cannot boldly proclaim the Resurrection of Christ and show his life in us, then we are not the church. To believe in Christ is to be transformed. Without that transformation we are wasting our time and His grace.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The previous Strategic Plan has done much to enliven and strengthen the Diocese. I am quite excited about the development of a new/continuing Strategic Plan as a way to carry that momentum forward.

Occupation:

I am privileged to serve as Rector of Ascension where I lead the spiritual life of our multicultural congregation. My aim is to ground all that we do – in worship, administration, outreach, evangelism, pastoral care and formation – in gratitude for the life we are given in Jesus Christ, and in the call for all Christians to live out their baptismal vocation.

Gifts and Skills:

Kai is a good listener. She is a skilled judge of people. She is open to new information and the possibility that it might alter her decision about a particular issue. She is able to relate well with a wide range of people who differ from her in their culture, religious beliefs, age, and/or socio-economic status.

Reason for Serving:

I believe that we are interdependent for the health of our mission in the Diocese. The Standing Committee impacts this interdependence by the ways it carries out its primary tasks. I would like to help carry out the tasks of the Standing Committee in ways which enhance the mission of the Diocese and its Parishes and institutions.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Jesus Christ has liberated me from the eternal power of darkness and death, and day by day invites me to receive the power of the resurrection, to leave behind all that separates me from his true life, and to give myself to the service of his purposes, wherein I find the riches of his life.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

I am most drawn to the vision of One Church. Our Diocese contains quite a diversity of congregations and peoples – rural and urban, Anglo, Hispanic, African, Asian; high, low and broad church liturgically; liberal, moderate and conservative theologically. In our diversity, our Lord has called us to gather around one table, to receive forgiveness, and to be strengthened and transformed for his service. The counties of northeast Texas over which our Diocese spreads are filled with men and women, teens and children, who hunger for the good news of Jesus Christ, who yearn to be brought from death to life. I believe our Diocese, working together as One Church, can be the agent of Christ’s transformative life. I will work to increase the Diocese’s commitment to the ministries which strengthen our common life, and to the strategies which support the ministry of our Parishes and institutions.

Her commitment to the Diocese and the people of the Diocese leads her to use her best gifts in its service.

Jesus Christ has transformed my life from working for compensation to full-time service to church and nonprofits, seeking to be God’s hands and feet in the world.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

I believe that congregational development and leadership development are very important to the success of the Diocese. Reason for Serving:

I look forward to helping the Diocese focus upon Jesus Christ and the Eucharist in all things we do. That means, we must actively support growth of our Parishes and make special provision for outreach. Outreach is an especially effective means of doing the work of Our Lord. That work directly engages members of Parishes and touches those who are in need providing them with the “tools” to improve their own lives.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Resurrection People’s lives focus upon the sacrifice of Christ and His resurrection. They frequently participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. God sent Christ to the world to communicate with people. We must communicate with The Lord by praying to him for guidance to do His will in the world.

The Mission-Orientation of the strategic plan most closely aligns with my passion to follow the Great Commission guideline to “GO and make disciples.”  Developing leadership, resources and unity are also essential elements of our calling, but we must keep the missional orientation of our plan continually in our focus. What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Christ is with us.  An essential question is how do I discern and carry out His will for me as I go about my daily life, particularly in relation to others.  I believe that sometimes the holy Spirit speaks to me through others at unexpected times.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The building of collaborations/interactions/networking among congregations to promote sharing of “best practices” across activities to help achieve the core strategy of resourcing transformation ministries.  The Esprit is a great means for sharing information among the Parishes, if Parishioners are aware of it and check it out regularly, as are the workshops offered by the Diocese for lay leaders in various aspects of Parish activities.  I would like to help further the sharing of information about what works/succeeds based on the practical experiences of Parishes and other churches.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Christ’s resurrection decrees God’s victory over the forces of evil or sin.  By God’s grace, we are the fellowship of the forgiven.  Through Christ, we are reconciled to God and because of Him, we are called to the ministry to bring God’s children into His fellowship, to wipe away unending tears from the eyes of those in darkness.

Accomplish its Goals?

The outreach/mission programs extending to the Third world countries, Nigeria to be specific, especially on issues of mass literacy on disease prevention and poverty eradication that would alleviate the pain and suffering of God’s children that are being persecuted because of their belief which puts some into the slavery of begging, making them question the authenticity of this Christians’ God.  I feel I have a call and passion for this humanitarian service. I am ready to devote my life and time for it.  In fact, I have been to medical missions to Africa and still on a regular basis send drugs and medical supplies including small durable medical equipment like wheelchairs and walkers to individuals overseas on my family account. I also offer free long distance telephone conversation on health education and medication teaching. I would like to reach out to more people in these categories instead of avoiding their calls because I could not do much alone. To equip myself skill wise and academically, I have taken the Servant Prep course with the World Mission Commission through the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas.  I have also attended the Millennium Developmental Goals for Disease Prevention and Poverty Eradication seminar from the American Lutheran Church, Washington, DC, delivered by Bishop Stanton in Dallas, and currently I am in school for graduate program in public health.

Occupation:

Gifts or Skills:

He loves God and God’s church with a passion. He speaks often of the need to reach out to other churches.  He is not a “yes” person.

Reason for Serving:

Through attending Diocesan conventions one becomes aware of the need to build positive relationships through open communications. We need to work in a spirit of mutual cooperation allowing us to move forward as One Church. That goal can only be achieved by discussion concerns in a positive manner.  I believe that negative communications fall on deaf ears. Through open lines of communications we can build mutual respect to work on opportunities to resolve the many issues that now divide us.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

In 1992 my partner, David Cheriana, passed away as a result of cancer. We had a long relationship that lasted over thirteen years. After his death, Christ led me to become more involved in the church where I found much needed support, spiritual guidance and the experience of accepting Christ’s call to service. That included kitchen duty, acolyte, LEM, many committees and eventually to serve on the vestry.  My faith in resurrection gave me the courage to move forward. To live the life of Christ we must give of ourselves, our talents, time and treasures in service.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The goal that leaped off the page for me is “One Church”. As a Diocese we have a challenge to open the lines of communications between our congregations. Many of the issues that currently seek to divide us can be brought into the proper prospective through one on one conversations allowing for the exchange of concerns and seek resolutions. We must remind ourselves, both clergy and lay members, that we are called to be brothers and sisters in Christ. We also must seek opportunities to build “Cooperation among and between churches”. A good example of an opportunity that has surfaced in many congregations is the community garden movement. This ministry of giving back to the community, especially to those in need, also ties into our goal of “Maintenance to Mission. The community garden movement allows us to expand our mission with their neighbors and within their congregations.  We need to look at other ministries that will offer its options to give back to those in need and build cooperation between Parishes. The call to be “One Church” also requires us to seek opportunities to heal. Having attended Diocesan Conventions, it is obvious that we need to remind on another that winning the vote should be portrayed with dignity. Yelling to overcome those who have different views does not build cooperation but open the divide. We need to vote on such issues with ballots that remove the emotion and allows for a clear outcome. To build cooperation as One Church we seek open polite communication.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Spreading the word of Jesus Christ through outreach is paramount.  Transformation occurs when Christ touches others.  It is not enough to believe yourself, but to spread belief to others.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

As a former head counselor for Camp Crucis, I welcome the development of a new diocesan camp and retreat center.  Outreach to Episcopal youth is one of the most important undertakings we have for the future growth and development of our Church.

DEPUTY TO GENERAL CONVENTION – Clergy (Elect Four)

The Rev. William J. Cavanaugh – Church of the Epiphany, Richardson, Since 2004

Parish:

Rector, Church of the Epiphany, Richardson (2004 – present)

Diocese:

Diocesan Executive Council (2007-2009); Spiritual Fresh Start (2004-2006); Director for Cursillo; New Beginnings and Living Stones

Province:

General Convention Deputy (2009)

Community:

Leadership Richardson (2004-05); Richardson Citizen Police Academy (2006)

Occupation:

I work hard at being a faithful and hopefully effective Rector of the Parish as well as being a good husband and father to two sons.

Gifts or Skills:

Fr. Cavanaugh’s experience in different levels of church activities and regions, from Pennsylvania to New York, to Texas, to Oregon, and back, gives him a perspective to make prayerful decisions based on a broader vision of God’s plan for his Church. Fr. Cavanaugh’s focus is to build up the body of Christ at the Parish, diocesan, national, and international levels using his gifts of listening, prayer, study and sharing the Good News. He seeks the greater good for God’s people and His Church.

Reason for Serving:

I am excited about the focus on mission, growth and congregational health that is reflected in the Diocese of Dallas. I would like to share my passion about these gospel values and articulate the positive reality that is the Diocese of Dallas with the wider Church at General Convention. As a returning Deputy, I would likely have the opportunity to serve on a Legislative Committee.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Though I grew up in the Episcopal Church, I came to a living faith while in college. The Gospel’s message of hope, that in Christ we are accepted and loved as we are and yet are called to be radically new and whole in Christ, has transformed my life. I have also in numerous ways experienced the power of the resurrection, where defeat or disappointment or loss has been transformed into the new life by God’s grace. It is the message I try to share as a priest and is the message I believe the Church has to share with the world.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

I am enthused about the Diocese’s focus on raising up and equipping new Christian leaders, and I believe that as “One Church” we in the Diocese of Dallas are making a faithful response to the issues of the Church and are able to move forward in mission in positive and fruitful ways. We have a witness worth sharing with the wider Episcopal Church.

Occupation:

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, I also plan the monthly liturgical schedule for the clergy. I preside, assist and preach regularly and also lead chapel services at our Parish School. I also teach in our adult Christian Formation department.

Gifts or Skills:

Joy is intelligent, thoughtful and not given to “snap” decisions or opinions. As Transfiguration’s Vicar, she has become expert at listening to all sides of a given issue and weighing them carefully before drawing a conclusion – good qualities in a General Convention deputy.

Reason for Serving:

It is important to participate in all levels of the church, to have a holistic perspective as the National Church hears the voices of all parts of our country. My involvement in the church locally and in other parts of the Anglican Communion has given me the experience to represent the church.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

This means that I can have faith that Christ through his Grace makes all things new and is renewing the face of the earth. This is an ongoing and trustworthy process.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The part of the plan that excites me the most is being Mission-Oriented. When we focus on working together to meet the needs of those less fortunate, we do what the Gospel commands us to do but also receive the benefit of strengthening our ties as a Diocesan family as differences fade in the background as common mission takes priority. I would like to see more projects like spending part of our Diocesan convention working on a Habitat House or Parishes who are not like-minded coming together on a mission team to go work in other parts of the Anglican Communion.

Reason for Serving:

I bring a centrist, broad perspective to being a Deputy to General Convention. Under the Anglican authorities of scripture, tradition, and reason, I believe I have a servant’s heart and equilibrium within the range of issues to bring to this role an effective, seasoned and faithful voice for the Diocese and the larger church.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Jesus Christ is the center of my life, the life of the Church and of all reality. As resurrected, the risen Christ brings all things to renewal and purpose. Thus, each day we have the outstanding privilege of serving in his name and in the power of the Spirit.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The best way for me to help accomplish the Diocesan goals is to enable Saint Michael and All Angels to be a fully participating congregation in the life, ministry and mission of the Diocese.

I would like to support the direction of the Diocese of Dallas as a part of the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church and in support of the Anglican Covenant.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

I can see the truth of this statement in the impact the Cross and Resurrection have made in my life and those in my family and congregation.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

I am especially drawn to the “Building Leaders” section of the plan and hope to continue to develop and support those future leaders of the Church.

I care about the Episcopal Church and our place in the larger church. I have served on The World Mission Committee for the past two conventions and am now at a place where I can have some influence there.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Because of the resurrection of Jesus, I am able to live in hope in all circumstances. If the Father can raise Jesus from the dead, he can transform my life, my family’s life, our church and our world.

Church planting, transformation and leadership.

Province/National:

Provincial Synod (2008)

Community:

Significant charitable work in McKinney through the McKinney ISD and Covenant Partner in the 3E Coalition of churches in McKinney; started “Believe!” a 10K race which benefits the Holy Family School scholarship fund.

Occupation:

Four years ago, St. Andrew’s, McKinney started with twelve people. Our membership is now over 250! As Vicar, I evangelize, preach, teach, encourage, lead, learn, listen, worship and pray.

Gifts or Skills:

Fr. Michie is a careful thinker and an eloquent speaker. He is good on his feet, and articulates his faith with passion and persuasion. Such skills are invaluable in a convention setting.

Reason for Serving:

“…a time to tear down and a time to build.” As a delegate I would build relationships across the church, advocate for unity in Anglicanism, and share the hope of church planting. I’ll bring energy, creativity, patience and prayer. I’d go to Indianapolis to build, not tear down!

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

“…but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” By Christ’s grace do I have this new life. Justified, forgiven and free, each day of new life is better than the last!

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

“….you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house.” The vision of the Diocese as one church in common mission most excites me. It is our Lord’s desire to see us unified, Spirit-filled, and hopeful. On the solid ground of Scripture, tradition and reason, I’d stand hopeful and firm as your Delegate at General Convention.

The Rev. Ally Perry Rector, St. John the Apostle, Pottsboro - Since 2001

Diocese:

Commission on Ministry (2004-2009); All Saints Camp Board (2004-2009); Titus Program for Rural Ministries (2009-present)

Community:

Pottsboro Ministerial Association

Occupation:

I am a full-time Parish Priest. I have served the church full-time since graduating from Seminary in 1978, except from 1997-2001 when I was on Sabbatical.

Gifts or Skills:

I think her experience with wider Episcopal Church will equip her to deal with the complex issues facing our national church.  Also I feel that she is very

conversant with the general orientation of our diocese and will represent us well in the dialogues that she’ll be engaged in.

Reason for Serving:

I would welcome the opportunity to represent the Diocese of Dallas at General Convention. When I travel outside this Diocese, I find that no one understands that this Diocese is open to women. Due to my long years in this church I know many people from other places.

Occupation:

I am privileged to serve as Rector of Ascension, where I lead the spiritual life of our multicultural congregation.

I have seen the power and grace of God mediated through the Church’s ministries, and I have grieved the damage to Christ’s mission brought by conflict and devotion to narrow agendas – domestically and in other parts of the Anglican Communion. I believe that relationships forged at General Convention are a means through which God will bring guidance and healing to the Church. I hope to serve in order to participate in those relationships, to share the work we are doing in the Diocese of Dallas and to take part in the legislative process that will shape the future of our Province.

I believe our Diocese, working together as One Church, can be an agent of Christ’s transformative life. I will seek to understand our diversity and common identity at a depth which will allow me to represent our Diocese fairly, and to make a valuable junior contribution to the delegation.

Gifts or Skills:

Trudie works well with people. She works well with people on every side of the issues that may be divisive. She keeps the lines of communication open and recognizes the talents and responsibilities of other members of the Diocese, both lay and clergy. With these gifts, Trudie would serve well as a member of the Diocesan Deputation to General Convention.

Reason for Serving:

I have the experience of serving at the last four General Conventions: as first alternate deputy, Legislative Aide to the Special Committee, alternate deputy, and volunteer for the Bishop of Healthcare Chaplaincies. I have worked hard and faithfully and would like to serve as deputy in 2012.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

This statement informs my preaching, my priestly ministry, and my personal faith. Jesus “who was crucified, died, and resurrected” brings us joy, strength, and comfort today, and the assurance of eternal life with God and those we love.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The Episcopal Hospital Chaplaincy strives to fulfill the four goals of the plan: Being One Church: It provides an umbrella under which we can all gather: ministry in hospitals and nursing homes. People from virtually every Church in the Diocese have participated in the program, either as visitors for the Chaplaincy, or as attendees at workshops. Developing Leaders: Many people now ordained, as well as lay leaders, began service outside their own Church in the Chaplaincy. Providing Resources: The

Chaplaincy is a resource for hospital and nursing home ministry, and for those considering a vocation in chaplaincy. It provides training for groups and individuals, the Order of St. Luke, and for crisis, hospital and nursing home ministry. Mission Oriented: The Chaplaincy brings the love of God and the Church to unchurched Episcopalians, or those from outside the Dallas area. In this process the lives of many patients are indeed transformed.

Christ is my Savior and strength.  Christ leads me in my thinking, prayers and my dealings with others.  Jesus is the best example of how we can live out our lives in service to others.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

Raising up of leaders is important to me, especially lay leaders. Our Priests shepherd us, but strong lay leaders assist the entire church and can accomplish great things if taught and spiritually directed to lead.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is my core belief.  My relationship with Christ and the power of His resurrection affects my life daily as I seek to stay on the path and the tasks that God the Father has set before me.  True peace comes from knowing that anything is possible through the resurrection Lord.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

As I look back to the “roll-out” of our strategic plan over ten years ago, I am still excited about the “Diocese as a Resource” and “Mission Oriented.”  We have accomplished a great deal as we have worked together to live into our strategic plan, recently during difficult times.  These two goals – providing the right resources for our Parish families in northeast Texas and working to stay focused on the Mission that Christ taught first to His disciples – has served our Diocesan family well.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Christ’s death and resurrection brought us the forgiveness of our sins through grace.  It is my duty to spread this news to others.  I do this by showing Christ’s love and forgiveness in the way we live and relate to others.  There is no greater example than to live our Baptismal Covenant.

Our Diocesan Statement echoes Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians: “If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” It is only through the Gospel of Jesus Christ that lives and communities and the world are transformed.

I hope to work with others in our Province to make faithful and responsible decisions which prepare us well for the future.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

I have been reborn in Christ and my life continues to be transformed every day. How can I be other than passionate about sharing such an abundant gift with others?

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

I am particularly excited about the opportunities to develop leaders among those worshiping in our churches today as well as those who will come to join us in the future. As Christians we are called to model servant leadership, and many who have never thought of themselves as traditional leaders will begin to recognize the gifts they have as faithful servants of Christ. Beyond modeling servant leadership my hope is to help others develop their own styles as appropriate for leading their families, Parishes, and the community at large, and for helping to lead others to Christ.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

If we are a resurrection people transformed by the power of Jesus Christ, then love rather than fear is the primary source of energy and motivation. As individuals and members of communities, we are living out a continual process of death and resurrection – not random change but transformation modeled on the life and teachings of Christ.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

I am most interested in those areas of the strategic plan that bring up Christians with inquiring and discerning hearts who spread the gospel through word and deed. Through communication and education, I would like to support laity and clergy in their ability to draw people to Christ. How Christians draw people to Christ varies according to the calling and situation of those aware of their ministry.

My professional experience and organizational skills could be of use to Diocese in the management of its business affairs.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and try to evidence this in the way I lead my life.  When I fail, I trust in Christ’s mercy to raise me up to try again in the hope that ultimately I will be transformed into the person I was intended to be.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

Increasing the number of communicants seems to be the key element in achieving the other objectives of the plan.  Developing a strategy for that at Good Shepherd has been one of my interests, and has proved to be reasonably successful.

Reason for Serving:

I have strong Christian conservative values and I want to protect and advance them. In this time of movement away from fundamental Christianity, I can protect my faith best by serving.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

What more can God entrust to us than the blood of His only Son, who died for our sins? Keeping our eyes on the cross reminds us that Jesus Christ has the power to transform lives.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

The Plan, developed several years ago, has been amended numerous times. The document is a Work in Progress, as it should be, in constant flux, reflecting the many changes in the church in recent years. The focus of the Diocese continues to be on growth and church planting, but even more importantly now includes evangelism, rural church development, and the Titus project. As people telecommute, leaving city life for “country quiet”, they find strength in other developing congregations, whose needs are similar to theirs. I belong to such a Parish. I believe my experiences and involvement now qualify me to serve on planning committees and assist with teaching and program implementation.

It would be an honor to represent the Diocese of Dallas at the Provincial Synod and to the Episcopal Church. Our Bishop and the people of our Diocese have a strong faith in Jesus Christ and exemplify this through the many outreach ministries locally, nationally, and internationally. We have a perspective in the church that needs to be represented.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Serving my first year on Standing Committee, I am deeply touched by the careful attention given to the work of our Diocese, to the clergy and to its people from the top of the organization to all of its committees and through the staff. There have, and will be, many huge obstacles to face daily, and by God’s grace and transforming power, these obstacles become abundant blessings for His church and His people.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

Personally, I am called into the Mission ministries—international work in Honduras and through DOK international expansion, and locally through the Cursillo movement and Rural Church expansion.  The Diocese (and its churches) has gone through a huge financial crunch and this strikes the Mission plan and all the strategic areas, but God is not limited by monies. My offering is to pray, to trust God and to offer myself to His service wherever called.

What Does Our Belief Statement Mean in your Life?

Resurrection is the core of Christianity. Sometimes things seem hopeless and leave me feeling lifeless. The Power of the Holy Spirit can and has transformed those times into a resurrection of my spirit and for that I am thankful.

Strategic Plan – What Area Excites You and What Would You do to help the Diocese Accomplish its Goals?

To make Parish leaders more aware of how the Diocese can be of help to them. I want to learn more about how the Diocese works and the help available. I believe that with that information I can help direct resources where they can be the most useful.
