If someone asked you—"what is your calling”—how would you answer?  With your job title, your socio-economic status, a geographical marker, the place you hold in the family, your passion, your profession.  Or maybe a combination of the above since vocational calling feels personal and tailor made.  Just like your DNA, your vocation is uniquely you.  Vocation could be described as how the threads of your gifts, talents, passion, profession and desires have woven themselves into the story of your life’s calling.  Lots of voices, demands and everyday business pull at this story.  To which voices should you be listening and are they hindering or helping you discern the good work to which you are being called?

Our Creator God continues His good work in the world today (John 5:17)  and calls us to partner in His salvation story.  We were all made in His image - created and put in the middle of a garden to “keep it” - to carry out this good work.   St. Paul calls us God’s fellow workers (1 Cor 3:9).  From your first job to your retirement and any step in between, the spiritual practice of holy listening is the discipline of discerning God’s will for your life.
How you are being called to partner in God’s continuing creation in the world that He named as good?  Discernment is much more about holy listening for God’s direction and will for your life and much less about making decisions about a what job comes next.

Who Should Attend
A day for Holy Listening is for all who may be wrestling with what comes next.  You may be nearing graduation and have no idea what to do with your education.  Maybe your children will be leaving home in a few years, and you can’t imagine what chapter follows.  Many are experiencing profound loss of family, job, finances and struggle with making sense of the turmoil.  Does a familiar tug keep showing up in your heart that you can’t seem to shake?

The what may be--service, ordained ministry, theological education, lay ministry or religious orders.   The how can be--practicing the spiritual discipline of Holy Listening that stills the heart so God can do the leading.

Come and discern your call.
