St. Matthew's Food Pantry Pivots for Outreach

Daily Bread Outreach was St. Matthew’s response to Shelter in Place. With gatherings over 10 suspended, safety precautions and social distancing in place, we re-formed and re-focused our Food Pantry efforts on those who search for food daily.

Out of the trunks and back seats of our cars, throughout COVID, our volunteers have faithfully ministered to our beloved neighbors 4 days a week.

From the church driveway, we provide single meal lunches, fresh produce when available, water, and masks for those who are without or worn out. We are currently averaging 159+ lunches per week.

By mid-May we joyfully welcomed back our East Dallas neighbors, safely reopening our Thursday Food Pantry, as a “to-go” Pantry. From the driveway of the church, we serve our full line of offerings: groceries, fresh produce, a hot meal with salad and fresh fruit, and clothing. While our neighbors wait for their grocery and clothes orders, they are welcome to a cold bottle of water and a new mask.

Our volunteers prepare each order inside while our neighbors remain safely outside. Thursday Food Pantry is currently serving 89+ people, with a continuing increase week to week. Between both our Daily Bread Outreach and Thursday Food Pantry, we are blessed to be serving our Cathedral neighbors 5 days a week, distributing each week 89+ bags of groceries, 89+ bags of fresh fruits and vegetables, 75+ hot meals, and 159+ lunches.
