Adopt-A-Family Golf Tournament
The St. James Annual Adopt-A-Family Golf Tournament is scheduled for October 8.
HISTORY
In October, 2000, St James organized and held a charity golf tournament at the Cedar Creek Country Club. It has been held annually since that time, raising net proceeds from a modest $2,000 the first year, to $10,000+ in 2004 through 2017.
The tournament is open to all, not just members of the Country Club. It is held on a Monday, when the Club is otherwise closed, begins with a luncheon, and ends at the church with the now famous Holy Smoke Barbecue dinner, prize raffle, and awards ceremony.
PURPOSE
All proceeds go to charity; none is retained for use by the church. The money is used for food, clothing, toys, and sundry items for needy families at Christmas. Families are identified and “vetted” by the Family Resource Center in Gun Barrel City. These are delivered directly to the homes of those families by church members in mid December.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
You do not have to be a golfer. Church members volunteer their time, and donations, in a myriad of activities. Some of these include help at the registration desk or the “fun” holes at the tournament, sponsoring a team or player, donating prizes for the raffle, sponsoring a golf hole with a sign displaying your name or business, soliciting prizes and donations from friends and businesses in the area, set- up and clean-up of the church for the dinner, pick-up of groceries from the store, putting together the boxes for delivery, participating in the delivery itself (this is a very heartwarming and gratifying experience), or simply bringing your family to the dinner for a modest fee or purchase raffle tickets.
Volunteer sign-up sheets for all activities will be available on the kitchen counter after church each Sunday in September and October, or call Gary Gallatin(903-498-2093), 2018 Tournament Chairman, and ask how you can help.
