MLK Day Parade Unite and Serve Initiative
Dear Fellow Clergy,
As part of our Unite & Serve initiative to partner with South Dallas and other churches to work on social justice issues together, our diocese is joining other churches again this year to enter a float in the Dallas Martin Luther King Day Parade on Monday, Jan. 21.
Clergy and lay folks are welcome to participate by helping to assemble the float, and / or by walking in the parade with our float. Here are the details --
Assembling the Float
Two sessions:
Friday, Jan. 18, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm
Saturday, Jan. 19, from 8:00 am to 12 noon
Float assembly location: Springcreek Church, 2660 Belt Line Road, Garland 75044
(Pastor Keith Stewart is leading the effort at Springcreek. All you need to do is just show up, ask what needs to be done, and jump in!)
Walking in the Parade
For those walking in the parade, we'll meet at the diocesan office parking lot at 8:00 am on Monday, Jan. 21.
A bus will take us to the parade staging area. The bus will later meet us at the parade ending point, and take us back to the diocesan office.
The parade route is one mile. (It goes straight down Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, ending at Fair Park.) It takes about 90 minutes to walk the parade route.
Our finish time will depend on where we are in the parade. I believe last year we were back at the diocesan office by about 1:30 pm.
We'll be able to have a total of about 50 people from all of the different churches walk in the parade. Each walker can carry a hand held sign (like a picket sign). The signs will have words / messages relating to Dr. King, the civil rights movement, social justice, nonviolence, etc.
I apologize for the late notice, but please do your best to get the word out in your parish by email or otherwise.
Questions? Contact Deacon Mark Hall -- , cell # (214) 457-6202.
If you have folks who plan to help assemble the float, I'd appreciate getting their names, but that is not absolutely essential.
If you have folks who plan to walk in the parade, please have them email me their name and cell #, so we can know when everyone has arrived for the bus on Monday morning.
