Morning Prayer App
"Lord, teach us to pray..." Luke 11:1
Looking for a morning prayer routine that doesn’t make you flip pages as you move through the various prayers?
Ryan Stewart has made an app for that. Well, for Android users, at least. The 16-year-old likes Rite II morning prayer but he wanted everything on one page, so he made an app that automatically feeds the readings, Psalter, and prayers on the page for the user. Having to click back and forth is “annoying to a lot of people including myself, so I decided to automate it,” he said.
The app allows the user to choose whether they are a priest or laity, pick Jubilate or Venite, and choose a Collect. A play button in the upper right corner activates text-to-speech, so people can listen to it while they get ready for work or school.
Stewart, who is the son of the Rev. Leslie Stewart, made the app for his home parish, Resurrection in Plano. He tried to create the app two years ago but lacked the programming experience to make it work. Now, as a junior at Plano West Senior High School, his skills are more honed.
He plans to create the app for IOS, and expand its scope to include other daily offices.
Stewart said he wanted to make the app to help Resurrection, a church plant, improve their social outreach. “I wanted to contribute to the church,” Stewart said. "...to help spread the Lord's word in our community.”
When not in school or church, Stewart enjoys programming, competitive speed cubing, video games, music and watching B-movies.
