    Evangelism: Sharing the Good News

    (Missional Theology & Practice)

    Jesus said, “Go into the world and preach the good news to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15)

    Our Baptismal Covenant asks: “Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ.” And we Respond, “I will with God’s Help.” (BCP, p.305)

    The mission of the Church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. (BCP, p. 855)

    This Evangelism Course is designed to equip students in sharing their faith in daily life and to serve as missional catalysts for their parish. Students who complete this course will be eligible to be nominated to be members of the EDOD Order of Evangelists.

    This 9-month course will be conducted through the Stanton School for Ministry and will meet every third Saturday of the month in person at Church of the Incarnation from 9:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m. For those taking the course out of town, we will have an online connection to the class meeting in person.

    Instructor: Canon Carrie Headington. Carrie is an evangelist whose passion is to share the good news of Jesus Christ and to equip the church to spread the Gospel in word and action. Carrie is in her 18th year serving as the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas’ evangelist equipping congregations in personal and parish evangelism. In addition to her diocesan work, Carrie is a published author on evangelism, teaches evangelism at Fuller Theological Seminary, and is part of the Presiding Bishop’s Evangelism Team travelling the country teaching on mission. Carrie is the Founder of the Good News Initiative and is a graduate of Yale and Harvard with degrees in evangelism and apologetics from Oxford University.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:   Upon completion of this course, students will have demonstrated the following:

     

    1. An ability to reflect theologically and practically on the meaning of evangelism and its role in the life of the church.

     

    1. A firm grasp of the nature of the Gospel and an ability to express the Good News of Jesus in a clear manner.

     

    1. A capacity to engage in conversations about faith and an ability to equip others (i.e. members of the church) to do the same.

     

    1. An understanding of the way Jesus evangelized and an ability to apply these lessons to their parish context.

     

    1. An ability to preach an evangelistic message.

     

    1. An understanding of the questions people in their surrounding community are asking about the Christian faith and an ability to engage both the question and questioner.

     

    1. An ability to teach and to motivate their congregations in evangelism.

     

    1. A capacity to create an evangelistic action plan for their parish.

     

    COURSE FORMAT:

    This course will be conducted over the course of one year (9 months total meeting for class once per month) at the Stanton School for Ministry and online.

    Assignment 2: Write a mission statement for your congregation’s evangelistic vision? Be succinct. Try to summarize in a few sentences. 

     

    Assignment 3: Design a simple way to describe missional church to the lay people in your parish. You will want to make sure they grasp their calling and role in the evangelistic vision. Feel free to be as creative as you like through the written word, video, multi-media, music, illustration.

    FINAL ASSIGNMENT  - Each student will design an evangelistic action plan for their parish covering one- three years which includes: equipping the congregation for the missional tasks, ways to involve the entire church body in the work of evangelism, providing space for seekers to ask questions and explore faith, ways to be a transformative presence in their community, and to be good news in word and deed as the body of Christ.
