Tamales and Such

You Say Tomato, I say Tamale: Join Holy Trinity in Garland for a tamale-making workshop, just in time for holiday gift-giving. The workshop is two days, starting at 11 a.m., December 13, and 9 a.m. on December 14. The first day is prep work including making masa and the filling, while the second day is assembly and steaming. The church is asking for a donation of $30, and those who sign up will make their own two-dozen tamales to take home.  So far about 20 are enrolled, but there is room for more if you register by December 11. Those interested should contact the Rev. J.D. Brown at

Christmas in a Small Town - Homes Tour: The Portmess House, owned and used by Good Shepherd in Terrell, is one of six featured houses on Terrell’s Social Science Club’s Christmas Homes Tour. The congregation is delighted to open its doors to the community and make new connections and friends.

Clean Slate:  St. Stephen’s in Sherman has a new composition slate roof on the historic church that was built in 1909. The roof had been damaged in a storm a couple of years ago. It took two months for workers to finish the work, but now it’s complete, functional and beautiful.

Hand-washing to Quilts

Who Doesn’t Love a Cozy Quilt? Good Shepherd in Terrell is selling raffle tickets to those who want to win a homemade quilt, made by a professional. Money made from the King-size quilt raffle will raise money for the church to update its 105-year-old organ. The parish needs to raise $80.000 to get the organ in good working shape. The drawing is Dec. 22 and you do not need to be present to win. Raffle tickets are $10 for one ticket or $25 for three. Those interested should email  or call 972-563-2412.

Wash Your Hands Please. St. Augustine’s in Dallas received a grant from the Episcopal Foundation of Dallas to purchase a children’s handwashing station to supplement its Parent’s Day Out program. The program has been a raging success since it started more than a year ago. The children’s hand-washing station will provide a place to clean up after playing in the  playground. The funds will also buy a washer and dryer unit as well to clean linens associated with the program. Parent’s Day Out has united the church and community with many crossover activities including movie nights and Advent events. And it’s helping the church move closer to its goal of having a pre-school on campus.

Happy Thanksgiving Y’all! Those of us from the diocese wish you and yours a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.
